Beginnings arise through observation; my sketches are a visual diary from my day to day experiences.  I draw in cafes, pubs, meetings, the theatre, at home or out and about anywhere – I almost always have a sketchbook with me, but in any case paper and pen can always be found.  Drawing helps me to focus my observation and helps me remember as well as providing images to use in further work.

My camera can also help to capture an observation, sometimes as a back up to my drawings and sometimes by itself.  When I draw my feelings in connection with the subject are often apparent to me when I look at the drawing, however sometimes with photographs I need to work on them digitally to bring out my experience of the subject rather than the camera’s representation of it.
